Reflection: Solomon's Splendor and the Kingdom's Division
1 Kings 10
In this chapter, Solomon’s wealth and wisdom attract the Queen of Sheba, who tests Solomon’s understanding and is astonished by his answers. The chapter emphasizes the global reputation of Solomon's wisdom, which was a gift from God. The Hebrew word חָכְמָה (ḥokmāh), meaning "wisdom," underscores Solomon’s leadership and discernment, which set him apart from all other kings.
1 Kings 11
Solomon’s downfall begins with his disobedience, as his foreign wives lead him into idolatry. Despite God’s warnings, Solomon’s heart turns away from God. The Hebrew word מַלְכּוּת (malkûṯ), meaning "kingdom," reflects the division that will come as a consequence of Solomon’s failure. God’s judgment on Solomon’s reign foreshadows the divided kingdom, with ten tribes following Jeroboam and two tribes remaining loyal to Solomon’s son.
1 Kings 12
Solomon's son, Rehoboam, inherits the throne, but his refusal to ease the burdens on the people causes the ten northern tribes to rebel and form their own kingdom under Jeroboam. The Hebrew word בַּיִת (bayit), meaning "house" or "kingdom," is central here as the once united kingdom of Israel splits into two. This marks a significant turning point in Israel’s history, emphasizing the importance of wise leadership and humility.
Prayer for Day 120
"Lord, thank You for the example of Solomon’s wisdom and the lessons we can learn from his failures. Help us to seek You first in all things and to lead with humility. Deliver us from deceit and help us live in peace with others. May we trust in Your guidance, just as Solomon did when he asked for wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen."
