The Secret Things Belong to God
Every now and then, a verse sticks out because—what does that even mean? I read it once, then again, and suddenly, it’s holding my attention longer than expected. Deuteronomy 29:29 is one of those verses:
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.”
It’s a simple enough statement, but it hits deep. There are things that God keeps to Himself—things we will never understand, no matter how much we study, pray, or overthink. And then there are the things He has revealed, the truths He’s handed to us to actually live by.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent a lot of time in the tension between those two realities. Wondering about the “secret things.” Wrestling with the unknowns. Why did this happen? What’s next? Am I making the right decision? Sometimes, I want to understand everything before I move forward. But this verse gently reminds me: I don’t have to. That’s not my job.
My job is to take what God has shown me and act on it. To trust Him with what I don’t know and be faithful with what I do.
How often do we delay obedience because we’re waiting for full clarity? We get stuck in the “what-ifs,” afraid to take a step unless we know the whole plan. But what if clarity isn’t the point? What if faith is?
Deuteronomy 29:29 challenges me to shift my focus. Instead of dwelling on what I can’t know, I need to lean into what’s already been revealed. The wisdom, the instructions, the calling God has made clear—it’s all right there, waiting to be walked out.
Some things belong to God alone. And that’s okay. Because what He has given us is more than enough.
What’s something God has already made clear to you that you need to stop overthinking and start acting on?
